Rotational Shelter Program is the “crown jewel” of the Interfaith Shelter Network of San Diego. This network group has over 120 participating congregations. The Rotational Shelter Program is a seasonal emergency program that takes in men, women, and families with children. Through neighbor congregations linking together, people are sheltered where there are no other shelters and receive the understanding and support of congregations when previously all they knew was fear and uncertainty. Congregations benefit by getting to know homeless individuals in the community and the mutual sharing of stories is beneficial to both. Case management is the key to success for our guests and as such, they are only sent to congregations in the Network after being screened by an area social service agency to assure there will be no active drug, alcohol, or mental health problems.
UCUC is proud to be a part of this community outreach which supports individuals and families as they move toward independence. This year we will work with Clairemont Lutheran Church and Our Mother of Confidence Church (where the kitchen and housing will be : 3131 Governor Drive, San Diego, CA 92122) Our UCUC responsibilities will be to host, make, serve, and join our guests for dinner. Additionally, each evening we will provide an overnight host/hostess. Our volunteer dates are: Friday, January 31, Saturday, February 1, Sunday, February 2, and Monday, February 3. The kitchen opens at 5:15pm each night and dinner is served buffet style at 6pm. If you would like to help, signup sheets will be available in the narthex so volunteers can indicate the food donations they can provide, typically enough for 12-16 people. Please consider contributing food, volunteering in the kitchen, and/or joining everyone for dinner. If you need more information or have questions, please contact Judy Wilkinson.
