Luke 1:46-55

Consider…
What do you do when you are afraid?

In our Bible story today, we see Mary break out in song after the angel visits with her and tells her that she is going to have a baby. We can imagine that she might be nervous or anxious or afraid. But, she responds in song.

“My soul glorifies our God!
My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.
God’s mercy is forever …
God fills the hungry …
God reminds all those God loves of God’s promises.”

Mary sings this song as an assurance to herself and those around her that God is going to provide. She’s reminding herself that God’s mercy and peace prevail. She’s reminding herself that God provides a way where there is seemingly no way.

When we sing, we can similarly remind ourselves of God’s presence with us. We can remind ourselves – whether we’re singing along with the radio or in the shower or while watching worship on Facebook – that God’s peace is coming.

Which song lyrics remind you of the peace God brings?

Pray
Dear God,
thank you for songs that speak to our hearts.
Thank you for music that reminds us of God’s peace.
Help us to sing joyfully this Advent
and to work for peace in all we do.
Amen.
