Scriptures: Psalm 63:1-8 & Luke 13:1-9
This passage from Luke engages listeners of Jesus
in an age-old question,
“How do you recognize winners and losers”?
For adherents to empire theology,
there is an automatic and easy answer.
Winners are those who do well.
Losers are those who suffer.
Jesus rejects this with a parable
telling us the only marker of success
is our readiness to bear the fruit of God’s realm.
Where do you see this in our world
and/or in yourself today?
Where is it missing?
Pray:
God of table and God of open door,
thank you for your invitation.
You feed the deep places in our spirits
and speak words that evoke turning for the good.
Send your Spirit to guide us
in turning toward
and trusting in you.
